Rocky Mountain Couples Thrills

A mountain biking class for beginners -- skills and thrills on the local trails.

Participants will learn the basics of mountain biking in a class setting then go out on the local trails around Helena to test out new skills. The intitial training will cover basic mountain biking maintenance, choosing the correct bike for your size, riding nutrition, and skills. There are over 80 miles of trails around Helena ranging in level of difficulty with many miles in the easy to moderate range. After participants have mastered some basic skills, they will hit the trail according to ability. All will be able to experience the fun and excitement of riding single track without leaving your comfort zone.

Course Content:

Day 1

  • 9:00-9:30 Meet at the local bike shop to rent bikes.   
  • 9:30-10:30 Bike Maintenance and Bike Gear 101.
  • 10:30-11:30 Ride to ExplorationWorks, in downtown Helena, -performing bike drills and learning balance on your bike.
  • 11:30-12:30 Lunch at ExplorationWorks
  • 12:30-3:00 Practice Riding on the mountain trails surrounding Helena.  Fun! Fun!

Following day 1 participants can continue to explore the trails on their own or explore all that Helena has to offer. 

Day 2

  • 9:00-10:00 Basic Nutrition for fueling for a longer bike ride.
  • 10:00-11:00 More skill drills and talking about what was learned the first day
  • 11:00-12:00 Switchbacks 101 – uphill and downhill
  • 12:00-1:00 Group Lunch at a downtown Helena restaurant
  • 1:00-3:00 Ride, ride, ride, practice, practice, practice.

Cost: $150

Includes lunch both days and healthy snacks in the morning. If participants do not own a mountain bike, rentals are available locally for approximately $50 per day.

Instructors: Christine Thennis and Matt Culpo

Christine Thennis and Matt Culpo will lead the class. Christine is a native of Helena and accomplished mountain biker who bought her first bike in 1987 and has been riding the trails ever since. Matt bought his first mountain bike in 1991 and has been an avid mountain bike enthusiast since, riding two to four times per week when the snow has melted. He is a full time bike mechanic and is often does trail side maintenance for groups and occasional tune-ups in the garage.
